Greetings everyone! Yes, its been a while since the blog has been last updated so I have decided to do it before I never get any more chance to do so. :P

For Non-Sec 1s:
Good luck and study hard + smart for your exams!
I am sure all of you can ace this Mid Year exam! :D

Some Exam Tips (Sponsored by Yi Jie):

Sleep early
Take short breaks
Eat something light before the exam (Too heavy will make you feel drowsy)

As for Sec 1s:
You'll be having a long break.
Practice on your instrument during the break since you do not have MY exams and I am sure all of you want to improve right?
If you did not sign out your instrument, you could look through your "band notebook" and gain hopefully, gain enlightenment from it. :D

or you can look through the score that your have (gently touch the sky & singapura medley)

and remember to take good care of yourself

For the record, Xinyu flew from Nanyang Junior College (whose lessons ended at 1.30pm) and Liyi flew from her home in Yewtee (who had to deposit bulky stuff at home from AMK first).

Clarifications

This post is just to clear all confusion that is occuring.

Firstly, Band room WILL NOT BE OPENED today.

Next, there will be no audience (parents) during the 5th December (this Saturday) because the number of
parents attending didn't reach the target set BUT there will STILL be..

Main Band performance (Nuts and Crackers)
Sec1s Combine Performance (Gently Touch the Sky)

Finally, I would like congratulate those who took part in the section ensemble competition at Westwood including me formally that we managed by luck/skill/less mistakes to win 2nd place in WestWood Ensemble Competition. It was totally UNEXPECTED for me. We did this together and I am proud of it.

One more thing, all the best for 5th December even though I won't be around!

Section blog is dying already. Anyway, this is what happen on 21st June. We chartered 2 bus to the Marina Barrage. On that day itself, it is packed with people. I think we're quite fortunate to be the first event. We're able to do sound test on that day and rehearse before our performance which boost our morale. To be honest, I feel that most pieces were played quite well. Soul Bossa Nova because of the percussion (Those who attend should know). Otherwise, pretty well done. I do not have others to comment about.

I also notice that late-coming is getting rather ridiculous. Being late for so long is totally NOT acceptable. I'm not pointing names or soever but I cannot stand people for being late for so long.
Also, I hope no one will be arrogant or complacent after this performance. If anyone wants to add on to say anything, feel free to do so.

I know its late but not too late to tell the section to take care of himself/herself during this school holidays.

Please also come punctually for band practices and remember to do your school holiday assignments.

I also do not want to see any seniors to be biased to any juniors. I also do not want to see any juniors not listening to their seniors.

This year SYF, I am proud to say we got a Silver! It is a team and band effort. Not to forget, our seniors, Xinyu and Liyi and also our tutor, the band, other section tutors and conductor, TICs, alumni, seniors, etc. Too many to name. >< It is the process that we truly learn something. Also,

I would also like to remind the section NOT to get complacent and arrogant especially after we get a Silver SYF.To be very honest, I've already seen changes in some of you (I will NOT mention any names). Reflect and think. Although I may act stupid or close one eyes, but I've been observing all of you.

Some notes on the lighter side: (Thanks to Xinyu I am able to find this 2 wonderful screenshots)

Its been so long since my last post due to the fact I am busy. Anyway like Angeline says, it is the last week to SYF. I am sure after today's practice, all of you gained a lot of confident. I, myself, also gained back my confidence to play well. If the band watch and follow Mr Lum, I am sure the band will get the Silver Medal.

A few things to note a few days before SYF:

1. NO LATE NIGHT (Sleep well and early for obvious reasons.)
2. Be positive
3. Do not stress yourself up
4. Take care of yourself
5. Do not tire yourself up

Also, I'd like to thank Xinyu and Liyi for coming back to watch/support/give us advice. I also like to take the opportunity to wish Douglas a speedy recovery (Although its not as speedy as I think).

I just thought of a riddle/joke today.
Someone got fooled by my riddle/joke anyway ;)
I won't mention any names.

did you guys enjoy today?! (exchange)

even though the sound was hardly heard. I hope you enjoyed today's exchange, and was more confident than the previous one with coral secondary.. even though we were the second band to perform (all thanks to Nicholas) i think that we can learn lots from other band. :)

like what ms Caneda said: " Even though Changkat Changi was the smallest band there, they had the strongest mindset."

we might be the first band to perform, so?!
that doesn't give us a good start. remember that try to come down for Individual practice so that both Sectionals and Rehearsals are both fruitful. to make Rehearsals more fruitful is by having a better and fruitful Sectionals.
like what the other conductors said sectionals is for sounding as 1 as a section. :)
and remember what ms Caneda said to us, and what was our reply.
therefore lets all work hard for SYF, 29/28 more days.. :)

Been a long time since I update. This week no test for my class :)

3 more days to our FIRST SYF Assembly performance. Please take this seriously as every performance is like a rehearsal and every performance is a rehearsal for the next performance. DO relax. Please do not slack too much though, we do not want to be too stressed out before the assembly programme, do we?

Also, please remember we're going there to make music. Remember what Mr Lum taught us. We're out to make music and also to enjoy it. So do not stress out on that day. Drink plenty of water.

need to improve:
1. watch condutor. [almost the whole band was not looking. look up, be brave.]
2. rythem sense. [follow metronum if you have to.]
3. respond to situation [dont stublem and fall.. pick yourself up.]
4. music making [look at the notice board in band room. what xinyu wrote]
5. bring good attitude [dont follow the school. be the outstanding one good way.]
6. have basic manners [remember CORAL SEC. SCH.]
7. sectionals. [fruitful ones]
- respect your SECTION LEADERS
- respect is to be earned, NOT given.

to be noted:
-spend time looking at your score
-everyone is a pencentage of the band
-have the right mindset when you enter the band room
-leave your egos out of the bandroom
-have passion
-be committed
-concentrate all the time
-have fun while playing
-note down what you thing is important

Happy Chinese New Year in Advance!

Firstly, I'd like to thank Xinyu and Liyi for coming on Friday to help and see us perform! It was quite a good performance in my opinion. Other than my stupid stands and Angeline's, everything went well at least for our section. But ya, I kind of like and enjoy it.

I shall not go into much details since most of you know how was Friday's performance.

On Wednesday, the band room should be opened by 2.30pm so please do not come later. I am sure all of you would want to see the new juniors.

Saturday Band practice of the New Year

I would like to say Belated Happy New Year. (Its too late now I know but to those people I haven't said yet) The school holidays are obviously over and is time for us to wake up. A brand new year and a brand new band practice on 3rd January.

To be honest, I kind of practise too much on Overture No1 and I left Chorale and Jubiloso out but I did practise it but not as often as Overture No1 so I am guilty of some mistakes being made. So what have all of you been doing the holidays? Do you spend it meaningfully?

Now, to the main point. Like what Mr Lum said, that 3 weeks of December holidays really did A LOT of damage to our music making in terms of many things. Ms Caneda also talked about a new word in 2009 which is "WE". It is that "WE" that makes us grow together and learn much more new things musically in band. Mr Lum also said we need to have self-discipline so that we can practise more efficiently without wasting everybody's time. Please also remember that we aim to produce a sound that is :

x )( y= xy

and not

x+y=x+y

Up to this point I think all of you should get my message.
By the way, Ms Caneda has given a new word so I'll give a new quote.

"It is your attitude and not your aptitude (Ability) that brings you to a higher altitude (Level)."

Moving on...
We have 1 more week to learn and MEMORISE Chorale and Jubiloso and Overture No1. I hope all of you know the fingering and clear your rhythms by now. Its going to be a tough ride since we still have many events like CCA Open House, etc.

Band Camp + Section Competition

Well, as you know that the Band Camp had ended, we've learn a few important things.

FIRST, we learn how to use a metronome efficiently for every piece (Even though we use it for almost every sectionals with ma'am xinyu's help and guidance)

SECONDLY, we also learn about many things Mr Tan teaches us for example articulations for Chorale and Jubiloso and for Overture for Windband No1. Mr Tan uses comical ways to teach us like "Don't Kill Nicholas" and I hope all of you remember. (Not just that part but all the parts he taught us)

THIRDLY, I think we've all learn a lesson from Mr Lum ---Rhythm is the fundamental building block of music. Without rhythm, the music will stop. So please count. A metronome is there for some purpose. Please also count your rhythm systematically so every beat fits into the bar.

LAST but no least for Band Camp, I would say although we've been through the 3 days camp, I feel its a fruitful experience. Please also remember to do your HOMEWORK.

Homework given by Mr Lum

Write down ALL your rhythms.
Write down Bar numbers so next time if Mr Lum ask you to play a bar number you can refer to it easily.
Please study your scores.
Keep in touch with your instrument. (So you'll not lose your embroche)

If you miss out the last point, please do "extra" homework and cover and focus the 1st three points. Thank you.

Yesterday, the 1st Recital and Section Competition have ended, I got nothing much to say but all I had to say is I got entangled. I understand how all of you felt puzzled or so. Anyway let me go to First Recital. Douglas, good try playing "Jingle Bells" but you need more work on that. Don't keep repeating the same note if you play it wrongly. Also, don't practise last minute. Zhiqing, good job playing "My Heart will go on". Like your tone.

As for Section Competition like what I say, its partly my fault. I lost confidence on the actual day and I guess all of you know why. I do not wish to tell much because I got a swimming gold test today. Let me also take the opportunity to say sorry if I've done him/her wrong.

HOW TO PRACTICE AT HOME AND GET THE MOST OUT OF IT!

Step 1:
Review the assignment sheet that your teacher gave you. What are the main ideas that you need to work on during this practice session? What are the things that you need to change in your playing or to focus on?

Step 2:
Look at the lesson material and determine what the lesson is trying to teach. Look for new terms, new concepts, and other special items that are often listed in the spaces between the lines of music or at the top of the lesson page. What are these new concepts? If your teacher assigned special terms to you, what are their definitions?

Step 3:
Do a standard warm-up routine. Either do the warm-up that your teacher has assigned you or practice the scales or rudiments that are a part of your assignment. Spend at least five minutes on your warm-up. Remember that the purpose of the warm-up is to get your body ready to play harder things and to reinforce good habits. Pay attention to your posture, horn or hand position, sound, tone quality, and breathing.

Step 4:
Look at the individual lines and pre-read them without playing. What is the key signature? What is the time signature? Are there any new notes that you do not know? Are there any strange fingerings or rhythmic patterns? Take note of these things and then play through the lesson.
At the end of each line use a highlighter or a pencil and mark the parts of the song that you know you are going to need to work on. Leave the easy stuff unmarked.

Step 5:
Spend at least 50% of your practice time working on the hard parts that you just marked in step 4. Take a short break in the middle of your practice session then go back and continue working on the hard material. The only way to fix it is to work it out a little bit at a time!

Step 6:
Once you have spent some time working out the hard parts of the lesson, go back and play through the entire assignment. If you still find yourself having problems with a specific section, mark it in some way and make yourself work on that section again during your next practice session. Always end your practice session with something you are comfortable with and enjoy playing.

haha. well done for the national day dinner's performance just now. (: and thanks so much for the doggie. haha. i know what yijie did to xinyu's doggie alr. well, i agree with mr lum that our section sounded strong just now, with 4 altos, 2 tenors and 1 baritone. [we are just short of a soprano. *hint hint to mr lum*]

-thanks to yihui ducky, tenor saxophonist turned baritone saxophonist. i could here you clear just now when i was beside you. you have really come a long way you know that? you were with me for abt 1 year before u got switched to baritone, great accomplishment. :) and i really appreciate your initiative to ask jovan abt the rhythms you werent sure of. i know u miss tenor, but baritone is an important instrument too. without you, the section wont be complete, cuz u're the bass of the section, supporting the others above you. (imagine a human without legs?) LOL.
-next, douglas chin. though i scold you everytime im here, you've done well too. dont be stubborn, change your Bb fingering. it sounds better, trust me. the alternate fingerings are there for another reason. you have to learn to control your air, dont blast out suddenly. and shape your sound to make it sound rounder too. i know sometimes its because of the faulty instrument. i really hope one day i can see you performing up on stage, without me there. then i can die in peace. (KIDDING! I STILL WANT TO LIVE TO 100 YEARS!) ok haha. yihui has alr done that, now it ur turn. :)
-zhiqing ar. haha. dont really know you well yet, seldom talk to you also. jiayou ok? aft yijie and angeline leave, you'll be leading the altos alr. you're a fast learner. (next time your blog kena spam, i go make up story for u. )

what ever Yijie wrote i agree.. if your have problems with studies, find your seniors.. they might be busy, hard to contact or even hardly seen.. but that does not mean your seniors don't care about or don't have time for you.. it bring pressure to your seniors if your grades are not showing good..

Band IS NOT extra thing.. it is PART of your time-table..

don't make the same thing happen again.. your don't want to have the same thing as Thursday rite??

and when your got things to say just share, within the section or within your best friends.. but we want all of your to be heard..

please do not suffer in silence.. don't regret when your pass out.. i know its early but years pass fast soon your will be graduating.. (but obviously me first lah)

Some things I would let you all know

Its me again. I have some things to let you people think about.

Well, we will be playing as a section and as a band in every combined practice. I hope you will put all your differences aside and concentrate on making music together. No conflicts in this section please.

Also, if you really cannot cope with your studies, there is such a thing call time management. Everyday, I am able to do finish all my homework or MOST of my homework and I usually still got time to play and relax. Its just a matter of how you use your time. My P6 form teacher once told me, "It is my pleasure to give you pressure, but it is my pressure to give you pleasure. You have to step out of the comfort zone and push yourself in order to succeed!"

Our section usually have 100% attendance and that is commendable. Keep it up! :D

Well, as you can see, our section got a lot of things to work on. I hope all of you can give me (your SL) the fullest cooperation and don't let this blog dies. (Well, even if the blog is dying I wont let it happen) This few upcoming weeks will also test your stamina and endurance. Please drink a lot of water and get yourself hydrated.

Also, I would like all of you to respect Mr Lum, Ms Caneda, Mr Gan and all other bandsmen especially the Drum Major(Jian Ying), Band Major(Guan Chin), Assitant Drum Major(Nicholas) and Secretary(Wan Ting). They are the people that lead the band.

Treat the Band Major as a Band Major and not like some other people else. Please cooperate with them. Remember to keep your volume down and not talk unnessarily during band practice.
One last thing I wish to add in, I hope you people will enjoy the 4 or 5 years in this band and in beatty secondary. Some Tips (part one)

Know your instrument
Belgian instrument maker Adolphe Sax patented the saxophone in 1846. He created 14 different varieties for military band and orchestra. The orchestral instruments were keyed in C and F. The military band instruments were keyed in B-flat and E-flat. These are the instruments that are still in use today including the sopranino, soprano, alto, tenor, baritone, bass, and contrabass.

Practice with a metronome
The metronome is a tool to help you improve your sense of time and tempo. Set the b.p.m. (beats per minute) slow enough so you can keep up. As you begin to feel more comfortable working with the metronome, gradually increase the speed until it becomes more of a challenge. Every instrumentalist should place a strong emphasis on developing a good, strong sense of time and rhythm.

Use a chromatic tuner
Intonation can only be improved by regular practice with a chromatic tuner or other fixed pitch instrument such as a piano or electronic keyboard. Saxophone intonation is affected by the quality of the mouthpiece/reed combination and make of the instrument. Intermediate and professional instruments tend to have better intonation. Also, poor breathing habits can adversely affect intonation. Always breathe deep using the diaphragm muscles. (Put your hand flat over your stomach when you inhale. Does it stick out? If not, you aren't breathing right. Your stomach should stick out when you breathe in and withdraw when you breathe out.)

Find the most in-tune notes on your instrument. Tune those notes and adjust your embouchure (the muscles in and around your mouth) to fix the other out of tune notes. Concert A is usually the best choice for starting to tune. Push the mouthpiece in to correct flatness; pull the mouthpiece out to correct sharpness. Temperature can affect tuning - cold instruments are flat and warm instruments are sharp. It’s a good idea to tune slightly flat at the beginning of your playing session so that you will fall into tune as you warm up. No further tuning will be necessary after you warm up. You should only adjust pitch with slight adjustments in your embouchure.

Mouthpieces and reeds
This is the most important part of your sound regardless of the quality of your instrument. Find the right mouthpiece and reed combination that works for you. Not all players can use the same mouthpiece with the same results. What works good for some people may not work for everyone. Your set-up should be easy to play and sound good. This is easier said than done! You must experiment with a few different mouthpieces and reeds to find what works best for you.

things to take note of:

If a wrong note is being played, dont stop just continue till the piece ends.
Keep good posture for every pratice and rehersal.
Take in deep breath and blow slowly to produce good sound.
Make every note sound round and with enough air supporting.
Don't just look at the scores, look at the conductor once in awhile.
Look of for your notes check if has anything missing.
Listen to your own sound carefully
Listen to the people around you, is your sound blended with theirs?

today was a torching lah.. 3hours of hardcore drill loxz.. then after 3hours of hardcore drills from MA'AM XINYU(BMB Band Majoratte o7/o8) SIR JIANYING(BMB Drum Major o8/o9) but train our basic and hearing.. (: then that was in the morning..

in the afternoon, our trainer came loxz.. then learn alot of things:
1. correct mouth shape.. 'O' not 'Mmmm'
2. play gliss (for pirates)
3. having expression in songs
4. trill..
hahaha.. i think onli the section will know what i mean.. (:

then went back to bandroom to celebrate ms caneda's birthday.. then got pictures of alot of things loxz.. dont knoe if liyi will up load.. :P anyways, she is __years old.. hahaha.. then i think that our presents and card she would like loxz.. :P

ok. we agreed to meet at bras basar at 2pm. the wonderful xinyu, yihui, angeline, yijie, zhiqing and douglas boarded the bus frm tpy to bras basar at 2pm, leaving poor liyi rotting at bras basah's popular (it's ok, im a NICEEE person). finally they reached. we went to swee lee to look here look there, and blah blah. zhiqing and i were hungry so we left for macdonalds first. then the rest came and here comes the photos.

wahaha. since the rooster is offline now, i shall make use of the chance to write another story. credits to MINGYANG who told me what to write. ((:
lols. i cant rmb what he told me, but roughly this is the story:

- lioness hired mas selamat to kill rooster.
- mas selamat thought of a plan, which was to put a teeny tiny bomb into rooster's
feed.
- mas selamat told lioness what to do.
- rooster ate his breakfast happily the next morning without realising that there was
a bomb in his food.
- after breakfast, rooster took his daily walk in the nearby forest.
- 30 mins later, the bomb exploded in rooster's stomach, killing the rooster.
- there goes the rooster. ((:

this is the end of the rooster. kudos to mingyang once again. lols. CAT DIDNT APPEAR IN THE STORY AT ALL!! NOT EVEN IN THE GRAND FINALE!! GRR. this story is damn comical. reminds me of road runner and coyote. hehe. perhaps mingyang watched too much videos when he was young. oops. rooster came online. byebye!

cat: once again, the rooster is dreaming in heaven. the rooster did not want to admit that he is weaker than cat and lioness and therefore, came up with his own version of the story. i shall continue with what is happening to the rooster in heaven next time when i have the time. tatas!

The Real Epic

The characters of the story are:

Lioness: Xin Yu
Cat: Li Yi
Rooster: Yi Jie
Mutated Spider: NPC (Non-player character)

I hope no one is offended since this is a TRUE story =)

Once upon a time, there was a Cat who was a weakling and dishonest (but she does have a heart by saying sorry to me in the later part of the story). She lived together with the Lioness in a den where cockroaches roamed around. Inside the den, cobwebs and creepy-crawlies were all over. As the Cat was a weakling, she decided ask for Lioness' help. For some odd reason, in the spider nest, there was a mutated big spider. The spider arrived and saw the Cat. The Cat mewed helplessly. As the lioness saw the Cat was so helpless she came to her rescue but to no avail, she PHAIL in saving the Cat. The lioness was trapped in the sticky web and she could not move! The Cat mewed even louder. She was so petrified that she dared not move. The spider was drooling and said sinisterly, "MWUHAHAHAHHA! YOU ARE SO DEAD!"

Suddenly, out the blue, the rooster appeared! A powerful and pure aura surrounded the rooster as the rooster showed his true power against the spider. The mutated spider could not help but clapped his hands and admit defeat. You wanna know why the rooster won without touching the spider? Because the rooster had great charisma and is totally a MORE POWERFUL FORCE than the Lioness and Cat. The Lioness was stunned while the Cat was dumbfounded. My powerful peck freed the Lioness. Being very proud, the Cat claimed that she could kill the spider without my help. The Lioness couldn't help but thanking me continuously. The Cat said, " Fine, you did win the spider and SAVE my life. I am SORRY!" Upon hearing that the rooster thought: Wow? I can win over the hearts of the Spider, Cat and Lioness. I am truely a winner.

NOTE: The 1st story being typed by The Cat was just a lie because The Cat is not willing to lose her pride by saying sorry to me. But in the real story she DID say sorry to me because she has a heart although it now seems that her pride is more important.

story starts~~(PART ONE)
once upon a time, the cat and the lioness were living together in a peaceful village. they were medical scientists and ran a farm of chickens and roosters for their experiments. unknown to them, one of their STUPID AND RETARDED roosters wandered into the lab one day and got himself infected with a deadly disease that could destroy the entire village in no time. fortunately, the lioness found out in time and told cat. together, they wore their protective suites and chased the rooster out into the jungle where the disease could not spread to any villagers. then, they began to catch the flying rooster. unknown to lioness and cat, the disease caused the rooster to have special powers too. therefore, it was a tough job trying to capture the INSANE rooster. the rooster ran around the jungle like nobody's business. however, lioness and cat were much stronger than rooster. lioness and cat finally caught up with rooster and the fight started. the rooster tried to act smart by pecking at cat. unknown to him, lioness was behind him. lioness gave rooster a powerful swipe that sent rooster flying into a tree. lioness then went to sit on rooster. rooster could not move under the weight of the lioness. cat went up and scratched rooster's face with lioness and caused rooster to cluck in pain. ((: lioness and cat were on the verge of winning when rooster let out a big and smelly fart that could cause the ozone layer's hole to become bigger. lioness and cat then jumped up onto the tree in disgust. rooster then flew up to the tree and fought with lioness and cat. cat took out her light sabre and chopped off rooster's wings. rooster then dropped to the ground. to give lioness some enjoyment in defeating the rooster, cat gave lioness the honour of slicing off rooster's head. however, rooster was too obsessed with winning that even on the way up to heaven, he was busy clucking out that he was the winner. cat then went to the pet shop to buy a muzzle to shut the rooster up.

this is my FIRST post since july? wahahaha.. section blog.. u shld feel HONOURED.. lols.. haha.. im crapping away now.. so.. *ahems ahems*.. time for serious matters.. heheh.. i sound so serious.. haha.. jkjk.. *ahem ahem*.. guys.. please dun faint aft reading this.. haha.. hmm.. apparently.. i MIGHT not be able to go for 6 jan's performance.. because.. i heard that the sec one orientation camp is on 5,6,7 jan.. and.. IF i psl.. den means i cant go for de performance.. but.. i tink that de camp date is wrong.. because 7 jan is a sunday.. the sec ones got so honoured meh.. open sch specially for them.. haiz.. so.. i'll only know the resuls of de psl stuff on the first day of school.. wish mi good luck.. cuz i DONT WANT to stay back every fri for the peer support session.. btw.. psl stands for peer support leader.. stay bac every fri is equilavent to HELL.. face the sec ones can vomit blood.. lols.. im ending here le.. wahaha.. all of us have posted here except our dear UNCLE SONGHUI!!!
